I don’t blame Mother Grundy for wanting to piss off and live in the wilds, to turn her back on a society that turns in on itself instead of standing together. I feel like that sometimes too, but of course, nowadays many of us don’t have the luxury of doing that, of escaping to live in the countryside, after all, the land is no longer free and belongs to those with deep pockets and corrupt.

The lobster who has never seen a kitchen before likely does not comprehend the meaning of the pot. But while lobsters in the ocean generally don’t have the means to educate themselves about kitchens, the American lack of understanding as to the mechanisms of fascism is not a matter of lack of means but willful ignorance towards something that happened far away and therefore, in their reasoning, would never concern or affect them.

The autonomy of those moving needs to be supported and not hindered because the particularity of challenges are different at different scales, requiring life at those scales to be allowed to act with nuance to the complexity of a changing world. Trying to manage this from on-high as an intelligent designer or manager only makes the situation worse as it hinders the adaptation that life needs to engage in to move with changing social and environmental climates and shifting resources.

I also think that people are just unsure about how to prepare and cook foraged foods. Berries and fruit aren’t a problem, for the most part you can just eat them as you find them. Plums are so good fresh from the tree, sun warmed and bursting with sweetness! I’m not going to lie, I ummed and ahhed about publishing this piece, a writing about plants. I thought in this time of turmoil, such a topic so seemingly mild as plants might not be the most pressing of issues and so almost didn’t write this. But then I thought again. Plants, whether in the garden or in the wilds soothe the soul and make all the world's ills seem less, if only for the few moments you are immersed in their environment. Sometimes we need to take time away from the front-line, if only to heal, replenish.
